Mouth Breathing is a common symptom of Sleep Apnea.
Sleep disorders in children are conditions that prevent them from getting the oxygen needed while they sleep, creating a form of suffocation. Obstructive sleep apnea in children is being increasingly recognized as a cause of attention and behavior problems as well as learning and developmental problems.
It is important to understand that the lack of oxygen needed for good sleep does not simply make you tired. There are a wide range of health conditions resulting from the cumulative effect of poor oxygenation and loss of sleep.
The health risks associated with sleep breathing disorders in children include:
• Diabetes
• Cardiovascular Disease
• Cognitive Deficiency
• ADHD
• Impaired Intelligence
• Delayed Development Dysfunctions of The Nervous System
• Depression
• Craniofacial Pain, Orthopedic Dysfunction of TM joints
The American Association of Pediatrics “Patient Parameters” states all children should be screened for snoring and all children who snore should have a sleep study for evaluation of apnea because of ADD / ADHD and cardiovascular risk.
If you or someone you know are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact our office to schedule an appointment.
The “BEARS” instrument is divided into five major sleep domains, providing a comprehensive screen for the major sleep disorders affecting children in the 2 to 18 year old range. Each sleep domain has a set of age-appropriate “trigger questions” for use in the clinical interview. The BEARS is a user-friendly pediatric sleep screening tool which significantly increases the amount of sleep information recorded as well as the likelihood of identifying sleep problems in children.
B = bedtime problems
E = excessive daytime sleepiness
A = awakenings during the night
R = regularity and duration of sleep
S = snoring

Use a food processor to shred jackfruit. You can also use forks to shred the jackfruit by hand once the jackfruit is softened (after step 3).
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add the onions and garlic and sauté for about 5 minutes until the onions have softened and begin to brown.
Add the chopped jackfruit, broth, agave, lime juice and all the spices to the pot and cover. Reduce heat and let it simmer until the jackfruit softens slightly, and about ½ of the liquid is absorbed. About 5 minutes.
If you find the jackfruit a bit wet, just cook a little longer. If you find it a little dry, just add a splash more vegetable broth.
